Several high quality documentaries and rather polished YouTube videos about Herculaneum have put "the other Pompeii" in the spotlight since the pandemic. Many tourists who visit Pompeii now make the short trip to Herculaneum to complete the circle. Most don't, however, and for this reason, Herculaneum has escaped the blight of mass tourism. How long this will last? You tell us. The only certainty is that the last thing Herculaneum needs is coachloads of tourists trudging around as seen in Pompeii. Overtourism in Italy has hit the headlines more than once in recent years and woe betide our heritage if it's not nipped in the bud.
Is Herculaneum more impressive than Pompeii? It's very different and much smaller. Mosaics in Herculaneum are better preserved, but all the most valuable mosaics from both sites have long since been removed and are kept in the Archaeological Museum of Naples.
The most important part of every Herculaneum tour is to get there without drama. The trusted grapevine reports that more than a few of our lovely American travellers are often late for their tour, or even miss out completely. Guys, here's the thing to remember: get on a train, get off a train, then walk for about twenty minutes. How to reach Herculaneum from Naples: train to Herculaneum (Ercolano Scavi station) from Naples (Napoli Centrale / Piazza Garibaldi station), 14 minutes on the Circumvesuviana line. How to reach Herculaneum from Pompeii: train from Pompeii (Pompeii Scavi-Villa dei Misteri station) back to Naples (Napoli Centrale / Piazza Garibaldi station) then on to Herculaneum (Ercolano Scavi station), 38 then 14 minutes on the Circumvesuviana line. Frequency for all connections, circa every 40 minutes on average.
It's really important to know how to use a map app on your device and to have the confidence to approach other people and ask a question. Don't be afraid! Many people in touristic areas such as Pompeii and Herculaneum speak good English and there is no reason why any American citizen should feel lost or abandoned. Always communicate while travelling, this is the best advice we can give.
Many American travellers heading for Herculaneum do get it right and are bang on time for their tours. For that, we are eternally grateful. The few who don't are generally those who send alot of messages between booking date and travel date, often repeating the same question. Everyone is different, and it's our duty to help those who need to be helped. It is very rare for a client to be late for a tour, and no one has ever been left behind completely. There have been a couple of close calls, however, all relating to missed trains or getting on the wrong train, or right train wrong direction. Always ask locally or call us on +353 1 443 4403.
